Reflection of my works in this semester: limitations and future improvements

Contemporary Art Practice is multimedia and multi-discipline required. Art is no more simply craftsmanship and works beyond the traditional sense of aesthetics.

As for the self-initiated project, my works are largely related to the ongoing social phenomenon and issues. However, due to the limitation of my knowledge in other disciplines, my understanding and interpretation of current social problems might be partial, biased, not all-inclusive and even sometimes superficial. Further exploration in philosophy, politics, sociology and psychology will facilitate me to present works with more maturity and profoundity.

The experimentation of different media and materials is not fully conducted in my practice. I will try to illustrate my works with more diversity in media and material use in the next semester, e.g., glass, performing arts, sound and textile for media, wood, wax, plaster, clay for materials. The techniques of  drawing, painting, screenprinting, film editing and image processing are also expected to improve.

More significantly, I need to gain further knowledge about the essence, prevalence and reception of contemporary art, both theoretically and practically,  and how the world is conceptualised and redefined through art practice.

The Cremaster Cycle  is a series of five feature-length films, together with related sculptures, photographs, drawings, and artist's books, created by American visual artist and filmmaker Matthew Barney . 'Prisons' by Giovanni Battista Piranesi--research in Architecture

Giovanni Battista   Piranesi  ( 4 October 1720 – 9 November 1778) was an Italian artist famous for his etchings  of Rome  and of fictitious and atmospheric "prisons" ( Le Carceri d'Invenzione ). The  Prisons  ( Carceri d'invenzione  or 'Imaginary Prisons'), is a series of 16 prints produced in first and second states that show enormous subterranean vaults with stairs and mighty machines. These images influenced Romanticism  and Surrealism . While the Vedutisti  (or "view makers") such as Canaletto  and Bellotto , more often reveled in the beauty of the sunlit place, in Piranesi this vision takes on what from a modern perspective could be called a Kafkaesque  distortion, seemingly erecting fantastic labyrinthine structures, epic in volume. Ideas behind my 1st and 2nd self-initiated project

There are so many contrasts in modern society: people from two sides of the world can be connected easily through social media, but we are not communicating with our neighbors any more; we can know how a place far from us looks like by searching videos and images, however, we will have to use Google map to find a place very close to us; we invent very advanced camera in order to capture the details of the world to the most authenticity, but meanwhile we use Photoshop, beauty modes to conceal our original and natural appearance...Is everything working for their initial purpose, or completely diverting to the opposite?
