Frances Stark-Research for Archival Perspective


Frances Stark is an interdisciplinary artist and writer, whose work centers on the use and meaning of language, and the translation of this process into the creative act She often works with carbon paper to hand-trace letters, words, and sentences from classic works by Emily Dickinson, Goethe, Hnery Miller, Samuel Beckett, and others to explore the voices and interior states of writers. She uses these hand-traced words, often in repetition, as visual motifs in drawings and mixed media works that reference a subject, mood, or another discipline such as music, architecture, or philosophy.
The feature-length video work My Best Thing, stems from an anonymous chat site Stark encountered online. The dialogues between Stark and her chat partners are represented by generalized, cartoon avatars that speak the chat transcripts. The subject matter of these chats range from art and the creative process, to sex and anonymity.The video’s form and content show how the new modes of online communication allow for both greater intimacy and anonymity, giving rise to new kinds of behaviors and relationships.

The Cremaster Cycle  is a series of five feature-length films, together with related sculptures, photographs, drawings, and artist's books, created by American visual artist and filmmaker Matthew Barney . 'Prisons' by Giovanni Battista Piranesi--research in Architecture

Giovanni Battista   Piranesi  ( 4 October 1720 – 9 November 1778) was an Italian artist famous for his etchings  of Rome  and of fictitious and atmospheric "prisons" ( Le Carceri d'Invenzione ). The  Prisons  ( Carceri d'invenzione  or 'Imaginary Prisons'), is a series of 16 prints produced in first and second states that show enormous subterranean vaults with stairs and mighty machines. These images influenced Romanticism  and Surrealism . While the Vedutisti  (or "view makers") such as Canaletto  and Bellotto , more often reveled in the beauty of the sunlit place, in Piranesi this vision takes on what from a modern perspective could be called a Kafkaesque  distortion, seemingly erecting fantastic labyrinthine structures, epic in volume. There are so many contrasts in modern society: people from two sides of the world can be connected easily through social media, but we are not communicating with our neighbors any more; we can know how a place far from us looks like by searching videos and images, however, we will have to use Google map to find a place very close to us; we invent very advanced camera in order to capture the details of the world to the most authenticity, but meanwhile we use Photoshop, beauty modes to conceal our original and natural appearance...Is everything working for their initial purpose, or completely diverting to the opposite?
